”We loved felting as a team - it's such a relaxing and easy thing to do together, and best of all - no prior skills required!
The instructions are really clear and I love that you can remove the wool from the felt if it doesn't look quite right.
Thank you again for your very generous loan of the additional kit, we hugely appreciate this.
Sending you very best wishes from our whole team,
Sarah” - from Poppy’s, London, 2023
Whether you have an idea or design ready to make a wall hanging, or just want to create as you go along, I can supply the materials to make a felt wall hanging of any size.
Build your own bespoke kit to suit your needs. You can choose the background size and colour (cream or natural grey/brown), and colour theme of dyed wools (tops) from Devon - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
What’s in the kit:
Background felt in either natural cream or natural brown - choose your size from the drop down box
felting pad, wooden tool, 4 felting needles (one is spare),
themed bundles of 8 wool colours - choose from the drop down box
offcuts for sampling (these may be odd shapes)
You can also order extra felting pads and tools if you are working with others, as well as extra colour bundles. Please email me for extras that you don’t see in drop down boxes and I will recalculate your order.
Background felt:
Email or phone to order larger lengths from 2m width felt by length up to 25m. The felt is 100% certified organic wool from British sheep. The natural grey/brown is from two certified regenerative farms, in Somerset and Devon.
Wool tops (dyed wool):
A superb colour range of wools from our Devon supplier of British wools. You can also order colours separately by email or phone.
The needle felting craft has grown in popularity over the last few years. This kit uniquely provides carefully chosen wool materials from the UK, entirely plastic free, so you can be sure you are practicing felting as sustainably as currently possible. The tutorials cover a range of topics demonstrating the simplicity of the technique and encouraging a creative approach by incorporating other materials you might have stashed away, such as textile fragments, yarns and even charcoal and other artists materials.
Topics include:
Needle Felting basics
Try Different Materials
Sampling and taking risks
Flowers illustrative
Mounting / hanging
Aftercare
Fibre testing
Potential for community collaboration;
The historic Bayeux Tapestry (technically an embroidery, not a tapestry) is nearly 70 meters in length and thought to have been made in the 11th Century, depicting the Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066. A number of skilled embroiderers worked collaboratively, and it looks like they had a lot of fun!
There are many benefits of working as a group, whether friends, family, colleagues or a community group, the sharing of a craft, handling the beautiful wool colours and creating a piece of art together brings a deep sense of well being and connection. It doesn’t take much to devise a theme, perhaps based on your community, nature and the environment, the sea or maybe an event; and bring a group of people together to learn the basic skills. My tutorials show how easily and quickly you can learn the skills. All participants in the two following projects had never done flat needle felting before (except for Wendy Froud who has used 3D needle felting in her work as an artist before).
Our theme is the River Teign, which rises from Dartmoor and passes our village. Designed by Sara Nunan, illustrator, and Yuli Somme, felt maker. We took inspiration from the Mappa Mundi, a 13th century map of the globe constructed on vellum and housed at Hereford Cathedral, which depicts the history, geography and destiny of humanity as understood at that time. By using a mythological river serpent as a conveyance for our narrative, we wanted to create an engaging piece that would tell our story about the river from a human perspective and reflect on our relationship to this entity and how, by informing ourselves we can change our behaviours in order to enhance the natural life of the river. Our wall hanging is now on display at National Trust Drogo Castle as part of the River Teign Restoration Project.
The Dreamboat was similarly a community project involving 20 people over a period of weekly sessions; some felted their vision of what they might see through an imaginary porthole, whilst others created waves, the sea and the colours of the boat.
NB The kit is not suitable for small children, and any child under 10 should be supervised. The needles included in the kit can cause harm, and can also break. If sensible precautions are not heeded - as with any sharp instruments - we cannot take responsibility for injury.
