Inspired by Yuli’s Norwegian roots, the Oseberg Cradle - a coffin alternative - moves away from the convention of a box, offering a safe, strong cradle with a thick, multi-layered cocoon of pure English organic wool felt in cream or natural dark brown. This is a design collaboration between Yuli Somme and cabinet maker, Sam Horrocks.
This famous Viking burial ship is named after the place is was found in Norway - Oseberg - a thing of beauty and inspiration.
Why a cradle?
We have designed the Oseberg Cradle coffin as an alternative to a conventional box, which we believe distances us from the process of grieving and the fact of death. The soft woollen shroud has a gentler presence, beckoning us to touch and connect with our loss. Over the years, customers mention this connection, and the soft curves and tactile qualities of the felt seem to help in this process.
Design details
Sam carefully sources sustainable and local wood, steam bends the side rails and uses traditional techniques that completely avoid glues and metal - these are 100% wood!
Yuli hand makes the wool shroud and strong hemp carrying handles. The handles have a wooden insert, with soft, natural felt covering, so that carrying is easy on the hands. The gentle curves and softness of the felt belies the sturdiness and strength of the Cradle.
The (optional) leaf shaped cover is threaded through the handles to secure. Felt decoration kits are available for you and your family/friends to decorate the cover. If you are local, it is also possible to arrange an in-person decorating session; please email Yuli for details
As with all Bellacouche products, it’s plastic free, 100% natural and fully biodegradable for minimal carbon footprint. We’ve designed this alternative coffin for cremation as well as burial. It can be used for burial in any graveyard or natural burial site.
