Our pets are important to us, especially evident during Covid lockdown and the increase of working from home. The death of a pet can cause real grief and a ceremony for burial or even cremation, can be helpful in acknowledging the loss, and the love and joy a pet has brought to those affected. To enfold and wrap your pet in the tactile warmth of wool felt for burial can be comforting.
Where there are children involved, pet ceremonies for burial are a very good way of gently introducing the concept of the cycle of life, and enhance our understanding of what it is to be alive. Honouring and marking the death of a loved pet can give children and adults a lasting and positive memory of a precious life.
I can provide a shroud for your pet. I make a standard range of pet shrouds from small to large as you can see in the gallery. These have wood slats sewn into the base and felt straps, to help support the body during burial. The medium and large shrouds are also open at the side to make it easier to tuck in your pet.
The extra small pet/animal shrouds are more like pouches, closing with a handmade wooden toggle.
Measure your animal – height to shoulder, length from tip of nose to tail base – then click on the appropriate size from the box or get in touch with me if you’re not sure. The measurements are exact, so if your pet is chubby, a larger size will fit better. For very small pets, such as Guinea pigs, small rodents and birds, please send me the measurement (length nose to tail base and height to shoulder for a mammal, beak to tail end for a bird) and I will make a pouch. For extra large sizes above those described, price on application.
I would always recommend burial; it’s better for the environment, and a felt shroud keeps the body safely in the earth, letting Nature do her work in the time-honoured way, but this may not be feasible for you if you do not have access to a garden or land. If you have questions about where and how to bury or cremate your loved pet, this website will help you.
Shrouds are usually made and posted within 24 hours.
Please add notes when ordering: measurements, even an image of your pet, and a date for the ceremony.
